7.1.1.1.1. Consolidated Tape

The consolidated tape, introduced in 1975, provides continuous, real-time data on trading volume and price for exchange-traded securities. It is called the “consolidated” tape because it consolidates trade information of listed securities from every exchange in the country. The place where the trade took place is not indicated on the tape. Securities that are listed on the NYSE or a regional exchange are reported to the consolidated tape, while Nasdaq securities are reported to a tape called Tape C.
