While dollar cost averaging is a great way to accumulate wealth over time, an investor using this strategy does not necessarily have a future target amount that she is trying to accumulate. Her primary goal is simply to invest a regular amount in a security each period. When investors have a specific amount they need to accumulate by a deadline, it is referred to as averaging to a capital goal within a specified time period. Examples of this would be an investor needing $100,000 in 20 year
